Donaldson Dam

To us there is more to carp fishing than just catching fish. We feel that it is about experiencing nature, enjoying a great social atmosphere, and having a fantastic holiday at the same time, and with our trips to Africa you get all of these. Africa really is a wonderful country, from it's culture and weather to it's nature and of course it's carp fishing. For three years now South Africa has been a must visit for us and we never tire of going there. If luxury, fantastic fishing, beautiful weather and a carp fishing adventure are what you seek, then Africa is ideal.

You can visit at any time of the year, and our spring and autumn (their autumn and spring respectively) are fantastic times of year as the fishing is at it's best. Alternatively you can fish with Rob Hughes Simon Crow or Jon "Shoes" Jones and join one of our guided trips, and our preferred times are through our winter as there is nothing better than getting out there when the lakes are frozen in England and everyone is shivering, and you are sitting in the sun with the rods out. Either way there are African Gold staff at the lake to make sure your stay is an enjoyable one. African Gold head guide Gary Hoden is always there to look after your every need, as are the catering and ground staff to act as your ghillies. If you come on one of our guided trips you will be lead by either Rob, Simon or "Shoes", all of whom are experienced in fishing in Africa so you get to fish with some of the UK 's big names at the same time.

Obviously when fly to go fishing the equipment that you can take is limited. With our Africa trips virtually everything is included (rods reels bivvy bedchair etc) and literally all you need to take fishing tackle wise is your own terminal tackle box plus your sleeping bag. The gear is all top quality (Shimano Reels, Hutchy Rods, Fox Buzzers etc) and included in the price is flight transfers, fishing permits, the use of all gear, plus 3 full meals a day. The only extra's that you need to pay for are drinks and your bait. We usually use particles on our trips here and being so cheap a weeks bait will usually cost no more than £30.00.

A massive benefit with South Africa at the moment is that it is such a cheap place to visit. As virtually everything that you need is included in the price you need very little spending money, and £50 for a whole week is normally more than enough.

Rob's Top Tips

Peanuts or tigers as hook baits balanced on the bottom have been the most productive bait for us over the years on all of the lakes as they avoid the attentions of the smaller nuisance species and the crabs. In addition a big bed of smelly particles coupled with little and often topping up seems to really do the trick

Our guided trips which run through the winter from December to March normally run for 10 days giving plenty of time for fishing and sightseeing. Being fairly informal we do what the group wants to and often this involves visiting two different lakes (Donaldson and Snagmere) with a day out spotting lions and other big game on a game drive at a national park followed by a trip to Sun City for a bit of fun (game drive entrance fees are payable - normally around £30). Space on these trips is usually limited to 6 anglers plus the guide and non fishing guests so if the missus wants to come we will happily accommodate her.
